"I am indebted to my executive coach, Gretchen Hydo, for her counsel and mentorship. She has helped me deepen my leadership ability." — Christine, Marketing and Communications Professional

I never take words like these lightly.

Christine and I worked together through a leadership program, and she brought so much intention and openness to the work we did together. She recently shared that our coaching helped her deepen her leadership ability, and that is exactly what I hope happens when someone steps into this work.

Leadership development isn`t about becoming someone different. It`s about understanding yourself more deeply so you can become more intentional about how you communicate, how you make decisions, and how you show up for the people around you.

Watching someone take what we uncover together and continue using it long after our work ends is one of the greatest privileges of being a coach.

Christine, thank you for trusting me to be part of your journey.

If you`re looking for this kind of support in your own leadership, I`d love to connect. Link in the comments.

A client came to me a few months ago saying she had no bandwidth.

Every session, began the same. Her feeling overwhelmed, having too much to do, not being able to prioritize herself. And while it was a good story, it wasn’t the whole truth.

So, I asked her a different question. What if it is not bandwidth? What if you just haven’t given yourself permission to do the things that are important to you and even if they take time away from the activities and tasks that you do that are important for others?

She went quiet.

What we found underneath the bandwidth conversation was a high performer who had built so much of her identity around being the person who could handle it all. She was capable, reliable, and deeply committed, but she had never really stopped to ask herself what she wanted to continue owning, what she was ready to hand off, and what kind of leader she wanted to become in this next season.

Once she could see that clearly, the conversation wasn`t really about her schedule anymore. It was about giving herself permission to live differently..

This is so much of what the Coach Approach to Leadership is about. Sometimes the first problem we bring into the room isn`t actually the problem we need to solve. Coaching gives us the space to get underneath it, understand what`s really driving our decisions, and make a different choice from there.

That`s when things begin to change.

If this is the level of leadership development you have been looking for, a connection call is where we start. Link in the comments.

September hits me differently than January does.

January gets all the credit for fresh starts. But September is when I actually stop and ask the honest questions. What have I accomplished this year? What is still sitting on the list? What is realistic to finish? And what is the one thing that, if I did it, I would be genuinely proud of myself?

This year I sat down with my list and looked at it for what it is..

Some things are done and I am proud of them. Hungary with my mom. Getting my hormones in order. Building a corporate program that has me lit up in ways I did not expect. Creating a community for women that I am so glad exists.

And then there is the book.

Outlined, not written. And when I am honest about why, it’s not done - the answer helps me to level-set. I want this book to have my name on it but not enough to sit down and write it. I don’t want to give up my time or creative energy to do it. And that is the difference between a should and a want.

A should sits on the list and can make you feel guilty. A want gets your time even when you have none to spare.

September is the chance to lay your goals out the way I used to lay out my boys` first-day-of-school outfits and ask yourself honestly which ones you are actually excited to wear.

What is on your list that you keep not doing? The full piece is in this month`s ACT On It newsletter. Link in the comments.

Most leaders I work with are not lacking in ambition or effort.

They are lacking in clarity about what is actually driving their decisions.

The ACT Method is the framework I built my entire coaching practice around. It is three moves that take you from the system you have been living inside to the one you consciously choose.

Awareness. You cannot change what you cannot see. The first move is naming what is actually running underneath your decisions, where it came from and what results it has been quietly creating.

Choice. Once you can see the system you get to make a real decision about what to keep, what to let go of, and what to build in its place.

Transformation. Awareness without action is just insight. This is where you take the first step from the new system and build the momentum that makes it stick.

This is the foundation of the Coach Approach to Leadership. And I put it into a free starter guide so you can begin exploring it on your own.

If you have ever felt the gap between where you are and where you know you are capable of going, this is a good place to start. Link in the comments.

Standing in Hungary earlier this summer, the country my mother was born in and escaped from as a baby, I kept thinking about something.

We do not just become who we are from our parents. We become who we are from their parents and their parents and the generations before them. The beliefs they carried. The rules they lived by. The ideas that were passed down so many times they stopped feeling like ideas and started feeling like facts.

And here is what that means for leadership.

Every leader walking into a room today is carrying a system they inherited long before they ever had a title. A system built from the environments they grew up in, the rules they absorbed, the beliefs that calcified into the way they see themselves and the people they lead.

Some of that system is worth keeping. The resilience. The work ethic. The values that root you.

Some of it has served its purpose. It helped someone survive. It helped someone make sense of the world. But it doesn`t belong in every leadership conversation today. Things that served someone else in a different time but do not belong in the room you are leading today.

And some of it needs to be let go entirely. The patterns that made sense once and are now quietly limiting everything you are trying to build.

The Coach Approach to Leadership starts here. With the question of what you are actually carrying into the room. Because the leaders who do this work lead differently. And the organizations that invest in it feel the difference.

If this is resonating I would love to connect. Link in the comments.
