One of my favorite emails landed in my inbox recently.

It was from someone I worked with several years ago. We had one coaching session together. She came in with a question she couldn`t stop thinking about, and we spent our time exploring what was underneath it. From there, she went out and did the work.

Since that conversation, she has built a creative career from the ground up, had her work published and recognized in ways she never imagined, and continues to create opportunities for herself that once felt out of reach. She wasn`t writing because she needed anything from me. She simply wanted to share what had happened and thank me for helping her ask a different question.

That`s one of the things I love most about coaching. It isn`t about giving someone the answer or mapping out every step they should take next. More often, it`s about asking the question that helps them see themselves, their situation, or their possibilities in a completely different way. Once that shift happens, people begin making decisions from a different place, and that`s where real change begins.

The Coach Approach to Leadership is built on those moments. Sometimes it comes through a long-term coaching relationship, and sometimes it starts with a single conversation that helps someone move forward with clarity and confidence.

If you`ve been circling a decision, thinking about your next chapter, or feeling like something is keeping you from moving forward, I`d love to have that conversation with you.

The link is in the comments.

A few weeks ago I was talking with a leader who said, "I don`t understand it. My team is talented. They`re smart. They know what to do. So why does everything still feel so hard?"

It wasn`t really a question about her team.
It was a question about leadership.

After nearly two decades of coaching leaders, executives, and organizations, I`ve learned that most leadership challenges aren`t caused by a lack of intelligence or experience. They`re caused by something deeper.

We spend years learning how to do our jobs. Very few of us ever learn how to lead ourselves while we`re leading other people.

That`s what the Coach Approach to Leadership is built around.

It`s not another communication model or management framework. It`s about helping leaders understand what they`re bringing into every conversation, every decision, and every relationship so they can lead with greater clarity, presence, and intention.

Whether you`re an executive who`s hit a plateau, a founder growing into a new season of leadership, or an organization developing future leaders, this work starts in the same place.

You.

This month I`m going to be sharing more about what the Coach Approach to Leadership really looks like and why I believe it`s the missing piece in so many organizations.

If you`re curious whether it`s the right fit for you or your team, let`s talk. Link is in the comments.

There is a difference between caring about someone and caring for someone.

Caring about someone means you want what is best for them and you trust them to run their own life. Caring for someone means you step in and do it for them. One respects the other person. The other one, past a certain point, does not.

I got this confused for years.

In my marriage, I planned the meals, coordinated the calendars, made sure no ball ever dropped. I told myself it was because I cared about my husband. The truth was deeper than that. I was doing it because I was afraid that if I did not, no one would. So I took it all on before it became a problem.

The same pattern followed me into parenting. Every time I stepped in to prevent a mistake, I also stepped in front of the lesson that mistake was going to teach. I was not protecting my kids from failure. I was protecting myself from watching them struggle.

Here is what I had to learn. Help that shows up before anyone asked for it is usually caring for someone wearing the costume of caring about them.

So I built one new habit. Wait for the question. If someone asks for help you are free to say yes. If it has not been asked for, it is probably not yours to fix.

The people I love were never mine to manage. They were only ever mine to love. Every time I put down something that was not mine to carry, I did not love them less. I loved them better.

If this is landing for you, the full piece is in this month’s ACT On It newsletter. Link in the comments.

Some of the best leadership development work I do does not happen in a conference room.

It happens when an organization decides to step away from the day to day, create real space, and do the kind of work that actually changes how people lead.

An offsite is not a retreat. It is an investment in the culture you are trying to build. In the leaders you are developing. In the gap between where your organization is and where you want it to go.

Through the Coach Approach to Leadership I design and facilitate leadership experiences that go beyond frameworks and tools. We work on how leaders actually show up. How they communicate. How they create conditions for the people around them to rise.

If you are planning a leadership offsite or organizational development engagement for the second half of this year or into 2027, I would love to have a conversation about what that could look like.

“I didn’t realize how much of an impact Gretchen’s coaching was going to be for my personal journey and professional career transition as I began my business. Special acknowledgement to my instructor Gretchen. She was more than an instructor, she was someone who challenged the entire class and pulled out what was always within me.” — Group Coaching Student

When the work lands the way it is supposed to, people carry it. They share it. They come back to it.

That is what I am building toward every time I am in a room. An experience that keeps going long after the session ends. A shift that follows people home and changes how they show up on Monday and every day after.

If you are ready for that kind of support, I would love to connect. Link in the comments.
