What story do you find yourself stuck living in? You know…That internal narrative that has created your reality, based on the story that keeps whispering over and over in your ear.
Sound familiar? If you find yourself stuck in a story or a way of being that has defined your life, it may be time to flip the story!
Your Story
Stories can be literally anything. Some of the most common stories I have encountered in my career are variations of the same belief – “I’m not good enough”.
These stories always stem from the same idea – “I’m responsible and others are not”.
Other thoughts start to brew as a result of this thinking, such as “Someone like me can’t do something like that”. Or similarly “If you knew the things I’ve done, you wouldn’t like me. You surely wouldn’t accept me. So you definitely wouldn’t hire me.”
Does this sound like you? Or maybe you’ve had other thoughts…
“I’m lazy.”
“I’m a procrastinator.”
“I’m an overeater.”
“I’m an indulger.”
“I’m an overspender.”
You can fill in the blank for your own “I’m a ___.”
Your Reality
Our stories are so powerful, they can convince us that they are our reality.
Here’s what you need to know, though. The story you’ve been telling yourself (the one that you’ve been stuck in), is NOT your reality.
We see things through our own story lens. Until now, your story has not only convinced you that it’s real but it’s also propagated other thoughts that have stifled your ability to grow and move forward.
But now it’s time to wipe that lens clean and see your story more clearly.
Your Lens
To wipe your story lens clean, here’s what I want you to do.
- When you catch that thought coming up again, ask yourself “What’s the story my mind is telling me?”
- Then ask yourself “Is it 100% true?” Chances are that the thought you’re thinking about is NOT true.
- Then ask yourself “Well, what else could be true?” (“What else?”, “What else?”, What else?”) You’ll ask yourself this question three times so you can let go of your knee-jerk reaction/answers.
Wipe those thoughts away in order to access your higher thinking. Imagine if you didn’t believe those negative thoughts and instead, you believed a more positive version of that same thought.
Here’s what I mean… Say that you have always believed the thought “I’m lazy”. Now instead of convincing yourself that this is true, try putting a positive spin on that same thought.
“I’m a person who likes to relax.”
“I’m someone who doesn’t like to overbook myself.”
“I’m someone who values my time.”
The End
When you wipe your lens clean and start to see yourself more clearly, you’ll be surprised at the new answer and the new story that your mind will create!
Remember to follow these few, helpful tips when you’re looking through your story lens, and you will always end your story on a positive note.
