As a life and business coach, I have the privilege to work with a variety of people. Some are business people looking to up-level their careers, some are women who are struggling to manage work-life balance, some are couples who want to make positive strides to strengthen their relationships, and some want to figure out how to find and live their life’s purpose. Despite the difference in issues, they all have one common desire; to change some aspect of their life.
Sometimes the people I work with tell me they want to change, but after listening, it becomes clear that they are invested in their current circumstances, and although they know that change is needed, they are more comfortable being uncomfortable, than they are at the prospect of doing the work it takes to make long-lasting changes.
I understand that. Change brings up a lot of feelings. Letting go of old tools and replacing them with new ones can create anxiety and fear. When we go after the change, we aren’t always confident that what we are going to get on the other side is better than what we have now. We think it might be, but how do we know until we get there?
We don’t. And sometimes not knowing can be the very challenge we need to move forward or, it can keep us in place. To help my clients get unstuck, I ask them what it would mean to them on a personal level if this change occurred. How would they feel? In what ways would life be different? I help them create a picture that where the change has already taken place and the motivation is there. The limiting beliefs have been replaced and they have taken the steps they need to get from where they are to where they want to go. It is powerful!
